Thunderstorms, wind and subdivision rooflines
Summer afternoons in the Upstate often bring thunderstorms with strong gusts, and hail appears now and then. Subdivision homes tend to have complex rooflines, with hips, valleys and multiple pitches. More joints mean more places for wind to lift an edge or for water to find a way in.
Wind damage often starts at ridges, edges and corners, where uplift is strongest. After a big storm, a quick look from the ground for missing or creased shingles, plus a check of the attic for daylight or damp spots, tells you whether to call for an inspection.
